Mount Everest. Sagarmāthā. Chomolungma.

Called “Holy Mother” in Nepalese and with a peak at 8,848 meters (29,029 feet), Everest is the world’s tallest mountain. Two TEDx organizers have been inspired to join an expeditionary party and follow in the ill-fated footsteps of legendary explorers Mallory and Irvine up the North Face of Everest on the 60th anniversary of Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay’s first ascent of the summit. They will bring TEDx to our Holy Mother and the amazing individuals she attracts.

Eiso Vaandrager

Eiso-vaandragerFor me TEDxEverest symbolizes several things. First of all the opportunity to raise TEDx to new heights. With nearly 6500 TEDx events around the world, TEDx has truly become a global phenomenon. From the slums of Mumbai, to Wall street to the Amazon and now to Advanced Bascamp (6400m) at Mt. Everest. I’m truly proud of this amazing community that is pushing new ideas into this world. At TEDxEverest we will  be broadcasting some brilliant talks from TEDx events from around the world, giving them the opportunity to highlight these talks even more.

On a personal level, it’s an amazing opportunity and a huge challenge to go to this extreme and beautiful place just below the peak of Mt. Everest. When Nate told me about his plan to do this expedition, I just couldn’t get it out of my head. After several months of saying that I loved the idea but that it would be way to difficult and dangerous for me, I realized that I would always regret it if I wouldn’t do it. The fact that my wife Rosalie supports me in this adventure, helped me take the big leap and join the expedition.

I also hope to inspire others and bring the TEDx community closer together. My ultimate dream is that we can activate the wonderful TEDx community to start taking actions together. We estimate that the current Global TEDx community is between 6 and 10 million people strong and continues to grow rapidly. At the TEDxSummit we set the ambitious goal that the TEDx community could positively influence the lives of 1 billion people under the motto of: Inspire, Connect, Act. I hope the TEDx community will join forces to act on the many great ideas presented.
